Namgyal Tsemo Gompa, Monastery, Leh, Ladakh

The Namgyal Tsemo Gompa of Ladakh was founded by King Tashi Namgyal in the early 15th century, around the year 1430. This fort was once the royal residence of the Namgyal dynasty and is flanked by some temples built in veneration of the guardian deities , these temples are still standing today, unlike the fort which is almost in ruins , temples are visited everyday by a monk who opens the doors to light the butter-filled lamps every morning and evening in adoration of the deities. This is the time one can visit the Gompa.

The palace also called Lechen Palkhar‘  is situated on a hill. Above the palace on the highest point of Namgyal hill stands the victory tower it was built to commemorate Ladakh’s victory over the Balti Kashmir armies in the early 16th century, Dards bodies are placed under the image of Mahakala, the guardian deity to stop further invasion of Dards. At the back of the fort there are remains of much older fort , according to locals it is a Dard Castle which was built much before the Tibetan rulers came to Ladakh.
It boasts of a rich collection of some ancient manuscripts and wall paintings. One of the most treasured possessions of the monastery is a three-story high solid gold idol of Maitrieya Buddha (future Buddha, also known as the laughing Buddha). Namgyal Tsemo Monastery of Leh, Ladakh also houses a statue of Avaloketesvara and Manjushri, approximately one story high.

In the gloomy interior, one can just make out murals of “Shakyamuni” (the historical Buddha) and Tsongkha-pa, founder of the Gelug-pa sect. The veiled central deity itself sports a shiny phallus, believed to cure infertility in women. It also enshrines nearly 10 feet high of statues of Manjushri and Avaloketesvara. The  view of Leh city and valley from the top is worth spending time .

Sri Kedarnath Helicopter Service 2014

                                                                                        6246807397_bd7ceb20b0_z
The last year June 2013 floods had destroyed many flat lands which were regularly used at helipad in the Guptkashi , Sirsi, Sitapuri and Phata , the helipad at Sri Kedarnath was full of rocks and stone as the flood  water flowed  over it and then to the river Mandakini There were lots of speculations if Yatra will be allowed for Sri Kedarnath in the year 2014.
The hard labor put in by the Disaster Management team and the other Govt. Agencies worked in adverse conditions facing  rains , snow and bad weather  along with the low Oxygen at high  altitude prepared a new trekking route 14 km from Gaurikund  till Linchauli and then 6 km to Sri Kedarnath , a 21 km trek is quite difficult to climb as compared to the earlier trek. It is difficult for the Senior Citizens to do this trek The opening of main shrine doors this year the PAWAN HANS helicopter service was started from Guptkashi to Linchauli and onward 6 km trek steep in climb is to be done with same day return to Linchauli . Govt. of Uttrakhand with the help of private helicopter services offered free travel for the senior citizens .
The permission to operate the private helicopters up to  Sri Kedarnath valley was granted on 21 MAY 2014 and now the helicopter will land just 350 meters from the main shrine , it is a big relief to the pilgrims who were earlier walking 6 km to reach the Sri Kedarnath Shrine main temple and had to return same day.

The best part is one can reach Sonprayag  by any transport , from here onward the Govt. agencies have taken over for the all arrangements Govt. vehicles are available to take the pilgrims up to Gaurikund . All pilgrims are medically checked up to make sure that they are able to climb and walk in the high altitude area , after the registration they are allowed to start the trek  from Gauri Kund . 7 km. trek first stop is Bhim Bali where the refreshments are available, next halt is after 7 km at Linchauli ( 11000 ft)  from Bhim Bali , free tented accommodation , free food is available from the Uttrakhand Govt . Mules are available to take the pilgrims on payment basis till Linchauli
The next day the pilgrims are just 6 km short of Sri Kedarnath main temple , pilgrims are to visit the temple and return same day for a night stay at Linchauli ,it is a steep climb and quite exhausting,   for Senior Citizens free helicopter service is available , this year Uttrakhand  Govt. is taking all precautions and not allowing any one except for the priests and security personal to stay in the temple area and the Kedarnath Valley .
