Therefore the mighty<strong>\u00a0Ganaga<\/strong> was split into <strong>twelve holy channels<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0Alaknanda<\/strong> was one of them that later became the abode of Lord <strong>Vishnu or Badrinath<\/strong>. The temple of <strong>Shri Badrinathji<\/strong> on the banks of the <strong>Alaknanda river<\/strong>, dates back to the vedic times. Situated at an altitude of 3,133 mts., the present temple is believed to have been built by <strong>Adi Guru Shankaracharya- an 8th century&#8217;s philosopher-saint<\/strong>, who also established a &#8216;math&#8217; here. Also known as &#8216; <strong>Badri\u00a0Vishal<\/strong> &#8216;, <strong>Badrinath<\/strong> is one of the <strong>Panch\u00a0Badris<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">The Celestial Jyotirlingam<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\nAmidst the dramatic mountain scapes of the majestic<strong>\u00a0Kedarnath<\/strong> range stands one of the twelve<strong>\u00a0&#8216;Jyotirlings&#8217; of Kedar or Lord Shiva\u00a0<\/strong>situated at an altitude of 3584 mts. on the head of river<strong>\u00a0Mandakini<\/strong>, the shrine of <strong>Kedarnath<\/strong> is amongst the<strong> holiest pilgrimages<\/strong>\u00a0for the Hindus. Kedarnath\u00a0is a majestic sight,\u00a0it is\u00a0in the middle of a wide plateau surrounded by lofty snow-covered\u00a0peaks. The present temple, built in the 8th century by<strong> Adi Shankaracharya<\/strong>, stands adjacent to the site of an earlier temple built by the Pandavas. The inner walls of the assembly hall are decorated with figures of various deities and scenes from mythology.\u00a0before the main entrance of\u00a0the temple door a large statue of the <strong>Nandi Bull<\/strong> stands as guard. Dedicated to <strong>Lord Shiva<\/strong>, the exquisitely architecture <strong>Kedarnath temple<\/strong> is said to be more than a 1000 years old. Built of extremely large, heavy and evenly cut gray slabs of stones, it evokes wonder as to how these heavy slabs were handled in the earlier days. The temple has a &#8220;<strong>\u00a0Garbha\u00a0Griha<\/strong>&#8221; for worship and a Mandap apt for assemblies of pilgrims and visitors.
