It has a<strong> resemblance of Potala<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Palace in Lahsa . It is a Twelve Story structure , built as <strong>a Fort Monastery<\/strong> it is the<strong> largest structure in Ladakh<\/strong> , its position is such that is gives excellent East and West view of Indus plains , Matho Gompa in the East, Royal Palace of Stok across the Indus and Shey Palace to the West have excellent views<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7153\/6771306007_926afc94aa.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thikse Monastery Ladakh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe main attraction is<strong> fifteen meter tall Maitreya Buddha statue largest in Ladakh<\/strong> besides Buddhist art stupas, Thangkas, wall paintings and arms.<strong> \u00a0Sherab Sangpo<\/strong> one of the Six disciples of <strong>\u00a0Tsongkhapa founder of Gelugpa school<\/strong> carried bone powder and drop of blood of his Guru Tsongkhpa and a small statue of \u00a0Amitayus as a gift for king of \u00a0Ladakh in early 15th\u00a0Centenary in 1433 with the help from King a small monastery in a\u00a0village of <strong>Stagmo<\/strong>, to the north of the\u00a0Indus river was\u00a0shifted to this place , legend is when Sangpo \u00a0after the prayers, offering kept in a plate\u00a0\u00a0were taken away by two \u00a0crows, later it was found the offerings with plate were lying at a stone \u00a0 in an undisturbed condition , it was taken as a divine directive to build a monastery here . Thikse became prominent second to Hemis Monastery in Ladakh . Around 1770 the<strong> Lama of Hanle<\/strong> dictated that the elder son will be the King of Ladakh while the younger brothers will serve as Lamas at Thikse and Spituk\u00a0Monasteries<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2507\/3909478049_3eed21e116.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thikse , Beautifull roof<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe main attractions are the<strong> Bhavachakra <\/strong>the wheal of Life\u00a0\u00a0has insignia images of a snake, a bird and a pig that signify ignorance, attachment, and aversion . Next to this is the main assembly hall for prayers , a number of old manuscripts and hand painted collection of books along with 225 volumes of \u00a0Tangyur warped in silk are kept , it also have a<strong> Eleven headed Avalokitesvara<\/strong> with<strong> Padmasambhava . <\/strong>There are murals of <strong>Mahakal<\/strong> and <strong>Dukar<\/strong> \u00a0In the center of hall is a seat for His Holiness The Dalai Lama and on right is the seat of head of the monastery .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7156\/6771340129_56502a108f.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Two stories tall Maitreaya Budhha Statue at Thikse<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nA temple\u00a0dedicated\u00a0to<strong> Tara with 21 images<\/strong> , a small shrine of\u00a0protector\u00a0\u00a0deity of Thikse the<strong>\u00a0Cham-spring<\/strong> ,\u00a0\u00a0an image of the Buddha with two of his disciples and the deity <strong>Yamantaka<\/strong>\u00a0can be seen. In the courtyard murals of \u00a0<strong>\u00a0Tsong Khapa<\/strong>, <strong>the Buddha<\/strong> ,<strong> the Padmasambhava , Palden Lahmo and Mahakal <\/strong>are there.<br \/>\nOnly men are allowed to enter the top floor of the monastery \u00a0the <strong>Lamokhang temple<\/strong> above the temple\u00a0\u00a0local boys from the villages near by are students , among them few are chosen as Lamas , there is also an Nunnery\u00a0\u00a0located within the precincts of the monastery \u00a0is managed by the Monastery Administration. In Ladakh, nunneries were held in a grossly inferior status ,\u00a0\u00a0In the 1990s, awareness was raised on the status of the nuns\u00a0\u00a0to ensure a shift in their functional role of servitude and to one of true spiritual practice <strong>the Chief Lama, Thiksey Rinpoche<\/strong>\u00a0of this\u00a0Monastery was \u00a0important in the positive developments in the betterment of nuns.<br \/>\n<strong>Gustor Ritual<\/strong> is celebrated every year from 17th to 19th day of Ninth month of\u00a0Tibetan\u00a0calander which falls in October\/November . Scared Mask Dance or Cham Dance is performed as a part of the\u00a0ritual .
