{"id":1876,"date":"2016-04-30T10:00:50","date_gmt":"2016-04-30T04:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/?p=1876"},"modified":"2016-04-30T10:00:50","modified_gmt":"2016-04-30T04:30:50","slug":"lamayuru-gompa-monastery-ladakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/lamayuru-gompa-monastery-ladakh\/","title":{"rendered":"Lamayuru Gompa , Monastery, Ladakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>\u00a0Lamayuru<\/strong> is one of the largest and <strong>oldest gompa in Ladakh<\/strong>, situated in Kargil district on Srinagar- Leh highway at a height of 3510 meters,127 km from Leh about 15 Km from Fotu-La, it was\u00a0originally the <strong>Bonpo Monastery<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0called\u00a0<strong>gYung-drung<\/strong>\u00a0Monastery,\u00a0<strong>a Swastika\u00a0symbol<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>\u00a0gYung drung bon<\/strong> \u00a0is the name of the <strong>Bon religion , The Maha Sidhachrya Naropa <\/strong>founded the Lamayuru Monastery , he was a Buddhist scholar from <strong>Nalanda University<\/strong> who came here in search for his guru <strong>Tilopa<\/strong>, a master of Tantra,\u00a0\u00a0the oldest temple\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Seng-ge-sgang<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0was built by <strong>Monk Rinchen Zangpo<\/strong> who came from Tibet ,\u00a0great translator of Sanskrit Buddhist texts into Tibetan, he\u00a0under the patronage \u00a0from \u00a0King of Ladakh founded 108 Gompas in Ladakh, Spiti , Kinaur and Zanskar region.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7191\/6916107619_fe0ced8296.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lamayuru Gompa ( Monastery)<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe monastery is made up of a number of shrines and also has a very rich collection of thankas and magnificent wall paintings.<br \/>\nThe Dukhang (Assembly hall) is on the right side of the courtyard\u00a0\u00a0with a colourful depiction of the Guardians of the Four Directions. The mural on the left wall of the verandah depicts<strong> the proper way for a lama to live<\/strong> ,The temple has an image of <strong>Vairocana or the Teaching Buddha<\/strong> is seated on a lion serving as a throne and a <strong>Garuda<\/strong> (mythical bird) and sea monsters surround his head\u00a0. In the wall on the right side of the Dukhang is a small cave with three statues known as<strong> Naropa&#8217;s cave<\/strong>, where he is supposed to have meditated , \u00a0other two statues are of <strong>Marpa<\/strong> (Naropa&#8217;s student who became a translator of religious texts and famous poet) and <strong>Mila Ras-pa<\/strong> (Marpa&#8217;s student and a spiritual head of the red-hat sect of Tibetan Buddhism).\u00a0The right side of the Dukhang has three complete sets of <strong>the Kandshur<\/strong> (the 108 volumes of Buddha&#8217;s teachings)<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7176\/6916300243_90eb844425.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Lamayuru Gompa Assembly hall<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7040\/6916132011_144ff6b5a0.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stupas at Lamayuru Gompa<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nLegend is that this valley<strong> there use to be a lake\u00a0\u00a0at the time of Sakyamuni<\/strong> (the Historical Buddha). <strong>Nags<\/strong> (holy serpents) used to reside in the lake.<strong>\u00a0Bodhisattva Madhyantaka<\/strong> pridicted that\u00a0\u00a0the lake would eventually be dried, making way for the construction of a Buddhist monastery.\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Maha Siddhacharya Naropa<\/strong>, \u00a0meditated for years in one of the caves \u00a0, a crack developed in the hillside surrounding the lake. When the lake dried out he found a dead \u00a0tiger, he constructed the first temple at this site , known as the <strong>Singhe Ghang<\/strong> (Lion Mound).\u00a0\u00a0Later, <strong>Dharmaraja Jamyang Namgial<\/strong> offered the monastery to <strong>Chosje<\/strong> <strong>Danma<\/strong>\u00a0and started \u00a0observance of<strong> the rituals<\/strong> of\u00a0<strong>the Digung Kargyud School<\/strong>, the monastery was \u00a0renamed as\u00a0<strong>Yungdrung Tharpaling<\/strong>. At present the Lamayuru Monastery is served by the successive\u00a0<strong>reincarnations of Skyabsje Toldan Rinpoche<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7063\/6916404711_28f00bdde4.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Mahasidhacharya Naropa meditated in this cave<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Lamayuru Gompa plays host a masked dance, <strong>The Yundrung Kabgyad festival\u00a0<\/strong>which takes place on the 17th and 18th day of the 5th month of Tibetan lunar calendar which falls in the month of July.
