New addition to the monastery was made in 1999AD is the \u00a023 metre (75 ft) tall a statue made of gilded gold\u00a0of \u00a0<strong>Maitreya (the future) Buddha\u00a0<\/strong>in sitting posture on\u00a0the roof . It is one of the best kept monastery in Ladakh .<br \/>\nThe name Likir means\u00a0\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The Naga &#8211; Encircled&#8221;<\/strong>, representing the bodies of the two great serpent spirits, the<strong> Naga-Rajas, Nanda<\/strong> and <strong>Taksako .<\/strong> This monastery \u00a0originally belonged to the early <strong>Kadampa<\/strong> order of Tibetan Buddhism ,\u00a0<strong>Lama Lha-dbang-chosrje<\/strong>\u00a0 student \u00a0of \u00a0<strong>Tsongkhapa<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0converted the lamas to the reformed doctrines of the<strong> Gelugpa order<\/strong> in 15th\u00a0centenary\u00a0. This\u00a0\u00a0monastery is also popularly known as <strong>\u201cKlu-kkhyil\u201d<\/strong>, which means <strong>water spirits<\/strong>. It is believed that the monastery is the first in Ladakh to have been constructed by Tibetan monks.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/travel.paintedstork.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2010\/01\/likir_monastery.jpg?resize=434%2C273\" width=\"434\" height=\"273\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Likir Gompa Monastery<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe monastery is located on a top of hill on the bottom of hill is lush green agricultural fields it was expanded in 15th century by\u00a0\u00a0<strong>Lhawang Lodos Sangphu<\/strong> .\u00a0Monasteries that flourished during this period evolved their complexes as small fortress perched on strategic height, utilizing the terrain and reinforcing it with thick peripheral walls . Likir monastery is a classic example of a fort-monastery,\u00a0main temple at the highest point followed by monks residence just below them and their after the village houses, thick peripheral walls and narrow \u00a0open spaces as movement paths.<br \/>\nThere are over 100 monks and students who live here are taught <strong>Hindi, Sanskrit and English<\/strong> under the supervision of<strong> Central Institute of Buddhist Studies<\/strong> .It is also a seat of\u00a0<strong>the Ngari Rinpoche<\/strong> the younger brother of <strong>His Holiness the Dalai Lama<\/strong> .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm1.staticflickr.com\/76\/197518800_faccd2ceac.jpg?resize=375%2C500\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lord Buddha statue at Likir Monastery<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe monastery has two assembly halls, known \u00a0the older one is located on the right of the central courtyard with six rows of seats for the lamas and a throne for <strong>the Head Lama of Likir<\/strong> ,in the hall there are\u00a0statues of <strong>Bodhisattva<\/strong> , <strong>Amitabha<\/strong>,\u00a0large statues of <strong>Sakyamuni<\/strong>\u00a0, <strong>Maitreya\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0and<strong> Tsong Khapa<\/strong> the\u00a0founder of the yellow-hat sect. The second hall 200 years old\u00a0contains a statue of <strong>Avalokitesvara<\/strong> \u00a0with 1000 arms and 11 heads .\u00a0The left wall has paintings of the<strong> 35 Confessional Buddhas<\/strong> while the right wall has an image of <strong>Sakyamuni<\/strong> with two of his chiefs by his side . There is a good collection of\u00a0\u00a0old manuscripts, has a <strong>notable Thangka<\/strong> , old costumes and earthen pots .
