Drass<\/strong> is a small town on Srinagar – Leh National Highway 1D , 147 km from Srinagar and 60 km from Kargil at a height of 3230 meters<\/strong> from sea level \u00a0, it is also called the Himalayan gateway to Ladakh<\/strong> , it starts from Zoji-la and extends till Kargil<\/strong> , it is the second highest coldest inhabited place after Siberia on earth<\/strong> , the\u00a0temperature goes down till minus 60 degree\u00a0centigrade\u00a0in winters\u00a0, in the local Baltic language Dras means ” the Hell”<\/strong> There are heavy snow fall and\u00a0storms from November to April May .\u00a0During spring and summer, the valley transforms into lush green\u00a0Meadows\u00a0splashed with a variety of fragrant wild flowers
\nDrass River originates<\/strong> from the Machoi glacier near the \u00a0Zozila Pass<\/strong>. The river is joined \u00a0by many other rivers and streams flowing in from snowfields from the nearby mountains. The river Shigar flows in from the north drains<\/strong> and joins it in the Drass valley.
\nThe Puga Valley<\/strong> is famous for its hot water springs<\/strong> ,visitors come to this valley for a bath in these springs as this is known to help people suffering from rheumatism and skin diseases ,\u00a0Drass is a convenient base for a 3-day long trek to Suru valley\u00a0This trek passes through beautiful upland villages and wild flower \u00a0meadows on both sides of the \u00a0Umba \u00a0– La pass (\u00a04,500 meters )<\/strong>

\nThe town got famous after the 1999 Kargil War<\/strong> when it was being shelled by infiltrators till the Indian Army recaptured the three heights, namely<\/strong> Tololing, Tiger Hill and The Three Pimples overlooking National Highway 1D<\/strong> that passes through Drass.<\/strong>

\nIts inhabitants are mainly of the Dard origin , an Aryan race that migrated from Central Asian steppes. They speak Shina ,belongs to the Indo-European linguistic family. Their ancestral sport, horse-polo that the Dard plays with particular zeal<\/strong>, resembles our modern polo .
