Padum also called <strong>Padam <\/strong>the main village or town<strong> on the Doda river<\/strong> in the center of Zanskar valley and there are several small villages scattered around it.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm5.staticflickr.com\/4076\/4856847209_02d886ec63.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gateway to Zanskar Pensi-La (4400 meters) connects Suru and Zanskar valley<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nAccess to Zanskar is difficult from all sides as it is located sandwiched between\u00a0High mountain ridges on both sides of <strong>the Doda and Lingti\u2013kargyag valleys<\/strong>, which run<strong> north-west to south-east<\/strong>. On the <strong>south-west is the Great Himalaya range<\/strong> it\u00a0separates <strong>Zanskar from the Kisthwar and Chamba valley<\/strong> . On <strong>\u00a0the north-east is \u00a0the Zanskar Range, it \u00a0separates Zanskar from Ladakh.<\/strong> The only way out for the whole Zanskar valley is the Zanskar river, which cuts a deep and narrow gorge through the Zanskar range. In winters the commuting to this area\u00a0is maintained across mountain passes or along the Zanskar river when frozen.<strong>\u00a0Walking on<\/strong> <strong>Frozen river of Zanskar is an ultimate experience<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0it had been trade route for centuries for Zanskari valley. Now the route is also famous as winter trekking among adventure lovers.\u00a0<strong>Kargyag river which originates from<\/strong> <strong>Shingo &#8211; la and\u00a0\u00a0Tsarap river which originates from Baralacha &#8211; la<\/strong> joins near <strong>village\u00a0Purne<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0to form <strong>the Lungnak river (\u00a0\u00a0Lingti or Tsarap) <\/strong>this river flows towards the Zanskar central and <strong>meets the Doda river<\/strong> at\u00a0<strong>\u00a0Gzhung Khor \u00a0to form the Zanskar river . <\/strong>From Lahul Valley one can reach here by crossing the<strong>\u00a0The Shingo- La \u00a0<\/strong>at a height of 17000 feet from sea level .<br \/>\n<strong>New road<\/strong> is being built from <strong>Darcha to Padum and then to Nimmo<\/strong> meeting <strong>at Kargil-Leh highway<\/strong>\u00a0after its making<strong> Manali-Leh an all season road bypassing Barlacha la, Nakee la, Lachung-la and Tanglang-la along with building up of Rohtang Tunnel to bypass Rohtang, \u00a0until that would be operational only\u00a0motor able\u00a0approach to\u00a0Zanskar is \u00a0from Kargil.<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3550\/3521211331_5acecbc1d2.jpg?resize=500%2C321\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"321\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Village near Padum, Zanskar, Ladakh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe Great Himalyan range acts as a barrier for\u00a0protecting Ladakh and Zanskar from most of the monsoon, \u00a0May to September it is warm \u00a0and dry hardly any rainfall or snow in this period , water comes from the melting glaciers,\u00a0\u00a0winter snowfalls are of vital importance, since they feed the glaciers which melt in the summer and provide most of the irrigation water,\u00a0\u00a0barley, lentils, and potatoes are grown by farmers at the lower heights.<br \/>\nPeople of Zanskar have origin from\u00a0\u00a0<strong>an Indo-European the Mon and the Dard who came from Baltistan<\/strong> , the\u00a0Buddhism came here from Kashmir about 2200 years ago, \u00a0in the 7th century \u00a0the Tibetans\u00a0introduced Bon , <strong>\u00a08-10th\u00a0centenaries\u00a0\u00a0the monasteries of Karsha and Phugtal \u00a0were built<\/strong>. Zanskar existed as a more or less independent Buddhist Kingdom ruled by between \u00a0related royal families till 15 th\u00a0centenary.
