{"id":2212,"date":"2014-06-26T09:00:22","date_gmt":"2014-06-26T03:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/?p=2212"},"modified":"2014-06-26T09:00:22","modified_gmt":"2014-06-26T03:30:22","slug":"matho-gompa-monastery-leh-ladakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/2014\/06\/matho-gompa-monastery-leh-ladakh\/","title":{"rendered":"Matho Gompa , Monastery, Leh Ladakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Matho Monastery<\/strong>is \u00a0located in <strong>village Matho<\/strong> about 26 Km from Leh City on Leh &#8211; Manali road just opposite the<strong> Thiksey<\/strong> <strong>Monastery<\/strong> on the banks of Indus river , founded by <strong>Lama Dugpa Dorjee<\/strong> in 16th centenary belongs to<strong> Sakya Order<\/strong> only one in Ladakh, it is famous for its 400 years old Thankas which were\u00a0brought\u00a0from Tibet.\u00a0Inside the <strong>Lhakhang<\/strong> all the wall murals were painted in 1977 and are very colorfully done.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7013\/6771485669_1c2c9e2441.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matho Gompa Monastery<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe right entrance wall shows a<strong> White Mahaka<\/strong>l ,\u00a0to the left of this is a painting of the<strong> Four Headed Sarvavid<\/strong> the guardian aspect of <strong>Vairocana<\/strong> (the Teaching Buddha). The wall murals on the left side of the Lhakhang depict various lamas of the Sakya sect while the right wall shows the various manifestations of Sakyamuni.\u00a0The central panel of the right wall depicts<strong> Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa and Mila Ras-pa,<\/strong>\u00a0The central statue \u00a0is <strong>Sakyamuni<\/strong>, surrounding the statue are numerous small Buddha statues .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6039\/6359415681_e460dc5ca9.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Matho Gompa Monastery Leh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nInside the Dukhang are two rows of seats for the lamas and a throne seat reserved for the <strong>Rimpoche,<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0behind the throne seat are, from the left, the thousand-armed form of <strong>Avalokitesvara<\/strong> (a Buddhist deity similar to the<strong> Hindu god Shiva<\/strong> and believed to be reincarnated in the Dalai Lama),<strong> Maitreya<\/strong> (the Future Buddha of Compassion), <strong>Sakyamuni<\/strong> and a blessing Buddha.\u00a0\u00a0behind the throne seat are, from the left, the thousand-armed form of<strong> Avalokitesvara<\/strong> (a Buddhist deity analogous to the Hindu god Shiva and believed to be reincarnated in the Dalai Lama),<strong> Maitreya<\/strong> (the Future Buddha of Compassion),<strong> Sakyamuni<\/strong> and a blessing Buddha.\u00a0left side of the Dukhang shows various<strong> Sakya lamas<\/strong> and the <strong>Four Headed Sarvavid<\/strong>. The right wall depicts the<strong> four-armed manifestation of Avalokitesvara, a blue Sakyamuni and two Sakya lamas<\/strong>.\u00a0<strong>The Gokhang<\/strong>, in which meditation takes place, is ascribed great spiritual power as it is the room in which <strong>Matho&#8217;s order<\/strong> prays and enters into a trance. The oracle&#8217;s special clothing is hung in this room and the Gokhang also contains old weapons and Thankas, masks and statues. There is an old tradition,\u00a0\u00a0a representative of <strong>every family from Matho village brings a small bowl of maize grain from the first harvest to this room.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Ladies are not permitted in this area.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm7.staticflickr.com\/6058\/6359398255_fa6ab9d8ee.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><br \/>\nThe<strong> Matho Monastery<\/strong> hosts the <strong>Matho Nagrang Festival<\/strong>, an annual event.
