{"id":2215,"date":"2014-07-11T09:00:21","date_gmt":"2014-07-11T03:30:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/?p=2215"},"modified":"2014-07-11T09:00:21","modified_gmt":"2014-07-11T03:30:21","slug":"sani-gompa-monastery-zanskar-ladakh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/promarktravels.com\/blog\/2014\/07\/sani-gompa-monastery-zanskar-ladakh\/","title":{"rendered":"Sani Gompa, Monastery , Zanskar,Ladakh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Sani\u00a0Gompa Monastery<\/strong> of Ladakh also known as <strong>Turtot Gyat<\/strong>\u00a0situated on the road to Kargil, at a distance of approximately 6 km to the west of <strong>Padum<\/strong>.\u00a0belongs to\u00a0the<strong> Drukpa Kagyupa School<\/strong>,\u00a0\u00a0it is believed that the monastery was associated with <strong>Kanishka, Kushan ruler<\/strong> of 2nd century AD because of \u00a0the <strong>Kanika Stupa<\/strong> in the back yard and construction like a fort,\u00a0\u00a0the gompa is not built on a hill or mountain but on flat land. <strong>It is in the form of a castle<\/strong> and <strong>the Kanishka chorten<\/strong> is in the backyard of the enclosing stone walls with chortens mounted at intervals. Next to the Kanishka chorten are <strong>ten standing stones with engravings of deities in a pre-Tibetan style.<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0The entire Sani Monastery of Ladakh has been constructed in\u00a0parts, each dating back to a different century. The chorten inside the oldest part of Sani Monastery is believed to be erected in the 2nd century AD. On the other hand, the <strong>Dukhang (assembly hall)<\/strong> of the monastery is said to be constructed in the early 17th century.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3464\/3831238414_00f90f8076.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sani Gompa , Monastery<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nthe famous <strong>Indian Yogi Naropa.<\/strong> It is believed that the Yogi meditated under the <strong>Kanishka Stupa<\/strong>, situated in the backyard of the monastery. The same spot, where the <strong>Yogi<\/strong> sat in meditation, now houses a small room with a veiled<strong> bronze statue of the Yogi<\/strong>. It is on displayed on the eve of the<strong> Naro-Nasjal Festival<\/strong> every year in late July \u00a0or \u00a0in the first week of August, between the 15th and the 20th of the sixth Tibetan month. It takes place during the blooming of the \u00a0<strong>Guru Neropa Flower<\/strong>,\u00a0the Lamas from<strong> Bardan Monastery<\/strong> perform masked dances as ritual offering.\u00a0a magnificent plantation of huge old poplars adjoining the gompa is unusual as this region is mostly treeless<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm6.staticflickr.com\/5051\/5427339243_0e39d0b98f.jpg?resize=333%2C500\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stupa at Sani Gompa back yard<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong>The Dukhang<\/strong> (assembly hall) of the monastery is said to be constructed in the early 17th century.\u00a0The central praying hall is situated in the main building of the monastery and stands ornamented with a rich collection of the statues of popular Buddhist divinities and <strong>Kargud-pa high lamas ,t<\/strong>he walls of the praying hall are\u00a0decorated\u00a0with frescoes and <strong>Thangkas<\/strong>.\u00a0The Assembly Hall or Dukhang has 16 columns and houses <strong>images of Chamba, Chenren and Padmasambhava<\/strong> as well as others.
