It is the most dominating feature in <strong>Drass Valley<\/strong> , is on a confluence of number of spurs and over looks the long stretch of Srinagar-Leh highway. \u00a0In the local dialect <strong>\u201cBaltic\u201d Dras means \u201cHell\u201d<\/strong>. It is at a height of 3230 meter or 10990 ft. The surrounding mountain ridges however range from 16000 feet to 21000 feet. It has become famous as the second coldest inhabited place in the world . Winter temperature is sometimes comes down to less than minus 60 degrees.\u00a0\u00a0It is often called<strong> &#8216;The Gateway to Ladakh&#8217;<\/strong> . It also became famous during mid 1999 due to invasion and capturing of surrounding tops by the Mujaheddin with the help of Pakistani army which led to a war from Indian army to recapture the\u00a0territories back from the intruders.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7052\/6917598193_637942a2dd.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">My Salute to Brave Indian Soldiers , Plate at Drass Valley War Memorial<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nIt was mid June of 2010 \u00a0early morning \u00a0when we left Kargil , our driver wanted to cross the Zoji-La pass as early as possible to escape from melting snow and\u00a0heavy traffic on Leh-Srinagar Highway 1D. We entered the Drass\u00a0\u00a0Valley around 0530 hr. it was very cold and when I checked at the War Memorial which was closed at that time the temperature was -5 degree Centigrade , while waiting to open the gate my heart became so heavy I could not\u00a0control my self and tears started rolling out of my eyes , imagining the Kargil War and my country brave soldiers who fought not only the enemy but the cold adverse weather ,<strong> they\u00a0preferred bullets to be carried with them instead of food.<\/strong> The soldier with his INSAS Rifle on duty at Memorial Gate was having a cylinder with a burner on top with a flame to keep himself warm told me that <strong>in this cold the fingers become num .<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7061\/6917608861_2297f8cc6f.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">My first glimpses of Tiger Hill from Leh-Srinagar Highway<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nWhile travelling from Leh , we stayed a night at Kargil , early morning when we entered the Drass valley , \u00a0moon was still shining over our left side of the mountains , our Ladakhi driver who was very quite since we started from Kargil broke the\u00a0silence<strong> &#8221; woh dekho Tiger Hill &#8220;<\/strong> and my reaction was\u00a0<strong>&#8221; Wah&#8221;<\/strong> I was stunned with the beauty of it .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7067\/6917668667_2635358f08.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beauty of Tiger Hill from Leh-Srinagar highway<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nMost of the Cab drivers want to cross the Zoji-La\u00a0early morning because after the sun rise the warmth of\u00a0sun rays causes the melting of Glaciers , and \u00a0water flows on the roads and it is\u00a0difficult to drive in this patch, the <strong>War Memorial opens at 0800 hr. in the morning the war museum is worth visiting and paying respect to the Kargil War Heros.<\/strong><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\n<img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7189\/6917286529_133e0e74e4.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<dl>\n<dd>Drass War Memorial , Snow cap Tololing Ridge in backdrop<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>If one is\u00a0entering\u00a0the Drass valley from Kargil , it is about 2 hr. drive, \u00a0make sure you leave from Kargil in time when you reach Drass the War Memorial is open . Take care of your woolens as <strong>Drass valley is the second highest coldest\u00a0inhabited place on earth<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7060\/6917363983_68efe3c742.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Drass War Memorial at foot hill of Tololing Ridge, Kargil, Ladakh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong>&#8220;Sir, I&#8217;m on Tololing Top.<\/strong>&#8221; a simple message from<strong> Col. M.B. Ravindranath<\/strong> of \u00a02nd Rajputana Riffles minutes after recapturing the Top ,\u00a0\u00a0<strong>&#8220;Tololing being bang on the road, it choked our throats,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0says a field commander.<strong>\u00a0&#8220;That pressure is now off.&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0The victory earned by Ravindranath and his men a rare, direct<strong>\u00a0&#8220;well-done&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0from then army chief\u00a0<strong>Gen. V.P. Malik<\/strong>\u00a0.<br \/>\nI could feel that chill in my body while standing at the War memorial which is just below the Tololing top. \u00a0It took just six days for Indian troops to give final touches to the \u00a0successes by evicting well-entrenched intruders on four nearby outposts with names echoed all over the World &#8212;\u00a0<strong>Point 4590<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Rocky Knob,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Hump<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Point 5140<\/strong>. It could lead to the recapture of a similarly strategic height of <strong>Tiger Hill<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7066\/6917577139_ba361a249e.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tiger Hill Battle Plate at War Hero&#8217;s Memorial Drass, Ladakh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nTiger Hill has sharp conical features, which stands among the mountain tops a few kilometres north of Drass. During the Kargil war, the picture of Indian troops after having captured the <strong>Tiger Hill became the symbol of the Indian victory in the war.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Indian Armed \u00a0forces<\/strong> involved \u00a0to recapture the <strong>Tiger Hill<\/strong> were from the<strong> 18 Grenadiers<\/strong>\u00a0, <strong>\u00a02 Naga<\/strong>\u00a0and the<strong> 8 Sikh\u00a0Regiment\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0it\u00a0was one of the costliest operations for the Indian forces in the entire conflict, with casualties of nearly forty personnel killed and nearly a hundred wounded in the entire operation.\u00a0\u00a0In the 36 hour operation, the first meal our soldiers had were the dates left behind by the retreating Pakistanis.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7181\/6917562671_90a3686029.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Batra Top battle Plate, Drass Valley, Kargil, Ladakh<\/p><\/div><br \/>\n<strong>Captain Batra<\/strong>, the soldiers of 13 JAK Rifles charged the enemy position and captured <strong>Point 5140\u00a0<\/strong>set in motion a string of successes, such as<strong> Point 5100, Point 4700, Junction Peak and Three Pimples\u00a0<\/strong>with fellow<strong> Captain Anuj Nayyer<\/strong> who was awarded<strong> Maha Vir Chakra \u00a0<\/strong>, Capt.\u00a0Batra led his men to victory with the recapture of <strong>Point 4750 and Point 4875<\/strong>. It was the Captains and Majors\u00a0considered to be the cutting edge of the Indian army\u00a0who once again proved their worth\u00a0.\u00a0Sacrifice has the words<strong> &#8216;For our tomorrow, they gave their today&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a0this been true in the case of our gallant soldiers.
