It is located on the banks of river <strong>Hiranayavati<\/strong> , this place was also a capital of <strong>Malla Kings<\/strong> during the Lord Buddha&#8217;s time. This place can be reached from <strong>Varanasi<\/strong> or <strong>Gorakhpur<\/strong> by road<br \/>\n<strong>Lord Buddha<\/strong> prior to his death spent his days many times as most of <strong>the Malla&#8217;s Kings<\/strong> were his admirers.<br \/>\n<strong>Lord Buddha<\/strong> decided to spent his last days at<strong> Kushinagar<\/strong> because of many reasons (a) It was the proper venue for preaching of<strong> the Mah\u00e1-Sudassana Sutta <\/strong>\u00a0(b)<strong> Subahadra<\/strong>\u00a0 a 120 year-old Brahmin who, after getting attracted to Buddha&#8217;s speech, expressed his desire to join the Sangha, and is believed to be the last monk to be ordained by the Buddha\u00a0and became\u00a0\u00a0an <strong>Arahant<\/strong>\u00a0 (c) <strong>Brahaman Dona<\/strong>\u00a0lived here who was respected a lot, sorted the dispute of\u00a0distribution\u00a0of relics after Lords cremation .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8526\/8648138546_a9c2fa1c11.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"Mahaparinivana temple and Stupa\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mahaparinivana temple and Stupa<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nAccording to a late tradition, one-eighth of the Buddha&#8217;s relics were deposited in a cairn in <strong>Kushinara\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0by <strong>the Mallas <\/strong>Travelling in stages via <strong>Pava<\/strong> where he ate his last meal, offered by the blacksmith <strong>Cunda<\/strong>, he reached the final resting-place at the<strong> Saala\u00a0grove<\/strong>\u00a0by the bank of river\u00a0<strong>Hiranyawati <\/strong>\u00a0in <strong>Kushinagar<\/strong>, it was \u00a0the full moon day \u00a0 (<strong>Vaisakh Purnima<\/strong>) in <strong>543 BC<\/strong>. He told<strong> Ananda<\/strong> \u00a0 to prepare a bed for him with its head turned towards the north between two Saal trees\u00a0The Buddha was lying on his right side \u00a0with his head to the north when he breathed his last,\u00a0his body was taken into the town by the northern gate and out through the eastern gate ,\u00a0After the cremation, the relics were divided into eight equal portions by the Brahmin Dona, who distributed them to eight clans. (1)\u00a0<strong>King Ajatasattu of Magadha<\/strong> (2) <strong>The Licchavis of Veshali<\/strong> (3) <strong>The Sakyans of Kapilavatthu<\/strong> (4) <strong>The Bulians of Allakappa<\/strong> (5) \u00a0<strong>The Koliyans of Ramagama<\/strong> (6) <strong>The Mallas of Pava<\/strong> (7) <strong>The Brahman of Vethadipa<\/strong> (8) <strong>The Mallas of Kushinagar<\/strong> , the Urn was kept by the Dona himself ,by the time \u00a0<strong>the Mayurans of\u00a0Pipphalavana \u00a0<\/strong>arrived the distribution was done so they took the ashes , these people on their way to respective place raised<strong>\u00a0eight Stupas<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>for the relics, a ninth for the Urn, and a tenth for the ashes.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8542\/8648163734_882ea49382.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"Lord Buddha's Ashes were distributed under this tree\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lord Buddha&#8217;s Ashes were distributed under this tree<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe place of lord Buddha&#8217;s death,\u00a0\u00a0became one of the four holy places declared by the Buddha to be \u00a0places of pilgrimage for the pious.<br \/>\nThe significance of this region is also due to being Link &#8211; route \u00a0of ancient highways, among them were important highways Ayodhya &#8211; Janakpur (Bihar), Rajgrih &#8211; Vaishali &#8211; Shrawasti, Maharshi Valmiki&#8217;s Ashram, Ashoka, the great Mauryas, Pillars routes, passing through this district.<br \/>\nThe remains of the<strong> Parinirvana Stupa<\/strong> and <strong>Parinirvana Temple<\/strong>, when rediscovered, were covered in a 40 foot high mound of bricks surrounded by a dense thorny forest ,\u00a0\u00a0around 1861\u20131862 it was\u00a0suggested the site to be that of Gautama Buddha&#8217;s decease.\u00a0Although no decisive evidence was found to prove \u00a0supposition that the site known at \u00a0<strong>Matha \u00a0Kuar Ka Kot\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0was <strong>Kushinara<\/strong> , a series of monastic seals with the Sanskrit legend <strong>Mahaparinivane caturdiso Bhiksumghah<\/strong>\u00a0were taken to show that by the <strong>late Gupta period<\/strong> the site was understood to be that of the Buddha&#8217;s last breathed \u00a0.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8544\/8647013179_e91a13b063.jpg?resize=500%2C333\" alt=\"Lord Buddha breathed his last at this place\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lord Buddha breathed his last at this place<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nKushinagar was a capital city of the Malla kingdom of ancient India .\u00a0Many of the ruined stupas and viharas at Kushinagar date back to 3rd century BC to the 5th century AD when \u00a0prosperity was at its peak.<br \/>\nThis region was an ideal &#8216;Meditation Place&#8217; for sages, saints hermits and Mahatamas who were attracted by its pious. tranquil and charming natural surroundings.\u00a0 Archeological excavation has yielded rich collection of antiquities.
