Kandra in Sanskrit or Hindi means Cave .<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2940\/14332516578_28f0832002.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kandharia Mahadev Temple Khajuraho<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe east-facing Shiva temple is a culmination of the design ,<strong> Shikara<\/strong> rises about 30 meters (100 feet) above the platform which it shares with the older <strong>Devi Jagadambi<\/strong> temple. 84 smaller\u00a0\u00a0replicas adorn the main tower in a soaring, mountainous profusion. The\u00a0Carvings on the temples portray a wide variety of sexual acts(<strong> Mithuna<\/strong>), in different styles and moods &#8211; refinement and vulgarity, tenderness and lust, calculation and spontaneity, can all be found here, in a seemingly endless number of configurations and positions.<br \/>\nOn the South wall the first statue is of \u00a0the lord Ganesha and then the\u00a0<strong>Chamunda<\/strong> one of the sacred Seven Mothers or the <strong>Matrikas <\/strong>slayer of\u00a0two demons<strong> the Chanda and the Munda<\/strong>\u00a0, this statue is damaged but\u00a0brilliantly captures the goddess&#8217; terrifying image. Next is the image of<strong> Bhairav<\/strong>\u00a0 the lord of death and cremation grounds\u00a0\u00a0is a fierce manifestation of lord Shiva\u00a0shown here bearing a skull, hand drum, headdress of stylized flames, and accompanied by a Dog Vahan ( carrier) followed by\u00a0\u00a0other <strong>sacred Matrikas<\/strong> namely <strong>Ma Aindri<\/strong>, <strong>Ma Varahi<\/strong>, <strong>Ma Vaishnavi<\/strong>, <strong>Ma Kaumari<\/strong>, <strong>Ma Mahesvari<\/strong>, <strong>Ma Brahmani<\/strong> ( or first sacred <strong>Matrika<\/strong>) and <strong>Ma goddess Virabhadra.<\/strong><br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3848\/14515704441_8a47cf25ce.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Makara Toran at Kandharia Mahadev Temple<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe Temple has the main entrance a <strong>cave<\/strong> \u00a0(<strong> Kandra<\/strong> ) like opening the <strong>Mukha Mandapa, \u00a0<\/strong>with a<strong>\u00a0\u00a0Makara Torana (<\/strong>an arch in the form of the<strong> makara<\/strong>\u00a0 Crocodile<strong>, <\/strong>a mythical water creature with the jaws of a crocodile, ears of a lion, horns of a ram and tail of a fish<strong>)\u00a0<\/strong>has been carved out of a single stone and draped with loops from one side of the doorway to the other,\u00a0leading the passage \u00a0two halls the <strong>Mandapa\u00a0<\/strong>with two balcony the<strong> Bhadravalokna<\/strong>\u00a0, the inner roofs of the porch and mandap are \u00a0created like great upside down pools with flower and leaf motifs,\u00a0the main room where the white marble Shivaling is established is the<strong> Garbahgriha<\/strong>\u00a0and a space between the Mandapa and Garbhagriha is<strong> Antralaya<\/strong>\u00a0.<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 343px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.staticflickr.com\/2927\/14519090645_42228a7b0e.jpg?resize=333%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"333\" height=\"500\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Multi spire shikhara , Kandharia Mahdev Temple<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nThe great multi spire tower\u00a0of the <strong>sekhari<\/strong> type,\u00a0the most important conspicuous feature of the North India ( Nagara) temple\u00a0, is characterized by an ascending cluster of spires reflecting the idea of the temple as a mountain .<br \/>\n<div style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.staticflickr.com\/3884\/14332505129_2a40cce8f6.jpg?resize=500%2C333&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kandharia Mahadev Temple outer wall<\/p><\/div><br \/>\nOn the southeast wall a woman plays with a ball, another stretches her love-tired limbs, another gazes into a mirror, one engaged in writing a letter.\u00a0On the South side the couples are kissing, their bodies entwined in such a perfect union that one can cannot tell the arms and legs of one partner apart from the other.
