Harmandir Sahib<\/strong> or Darbar Sahib<\/strong> and as western’s call it the Golden Temple the supreme religious seat of Sikhs\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0is in the holy city of Amritsar , Punjab state<\/strong> \u00a0in North India .<\/strong>
\nAmritsar<\/strong>\u00a0is also mentioned \u00a0as Ramdas Pur<\/strong>\u00a0in earlier historical records , it is also pronounced as Ambarsar<\/strong> ( Pool of Ambrosia ) . City was established by the fourth Sikh Guru Ram Dass Ji<\/strong> by purchasing the land from the residents of the village Tung<\/strong> in 1574 AD The area around Amritsar<\/strong> has\u00a0the legend of Ramayana<\/strong> associated with it , \u00a0Rishi Balmiki’s<\/strong> ashram was here , the Devi Sita<\/strong> the Lord Rams<\/strong> wife \u00a0lived in exile and gave \u00a0birth twin sons<\/strong> \u00a0Lavh<\/strong> and Kush<\/strong>. It is said when the twin brothers\u00a0<\/strong> killed the entire \u00a0army of Lord Ram<\/strong> ,\u00a0at that time a jug of Ambrosia descended from heaven to restore the soldiers to life.

\nIt was in 1574 A.D. Guru Ram Das Ji<\/strong> made his home by the side of the pool, finding the air and water of his abode health-giving\u00a0\u00a0which was regarded as blessed with miraculous powers of healing and in 1577 AD.holy tank was excavated and named it<\/strong> Amritsar<\/strong> and the present city grew around it . The Fifth Guru Arjan Dev Ji<\/strong> conceived the idea of construction of the Gurudwara in the center of the pool, he himself designed and laid the foundation stone in late 1588<\/strong> \u00a0, it has four entrances symbolizing it open for all , it was completed in 1604 AD and Guru Granth Sahib was installed<\/strong> in it .\u00a0After this event it attained the status of \u2018Ath Sath Tirath\u2019 and\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0the Sikh community had their own Tirath<\/strong>, a pilgrimage center .

\nThe present \u00a0Harmandir Sahib was rebuilt in 1764 by the Jassa Singh Ahluwalia<\/strong> later \u00a0the founder of Kapurthala State<\/strong> in Punjab , it is said he in a battle with Afghans in 1762 \u00a0(Wadha Gulughara)<\/strong> who had destroyed Harmandir Sahib<\/strong>, \u00a0received Sixty Four wounds .
